Managing Your Time: The Truth About Recruiting in a Soft Market

A person I spoke with told me that because the market is soft it is easy to recruit and therefore I should lower my fees. Our fees are already very competitive, especially for our American clients thanks to the low Canadian $. A soft economy does produce more job seekers, for sure, however does that make it easier to recruit in and of itself? I don’t believe it does…but let’s follow the logic.

More candidates apply and therefore better candidates are more likely applying to your job ad. Agreed, but that is only a small part of the Talent Acquisition puzzle. How you identify the best candidate is the bigger question. What do you do to integrate that person into the organization is another…

Moreover this person I spoke with was being presumptuous as to the time and process being easier as well. In actuality, more candidates does not make the process easier, faster or less expensive. More candidates means more screening and you have to know what you are looking for from tangible and intangible perspectives. Better candidates only increase your chance of getting a better candidate in general, not that you are going to get a better candidate to fit your vacancy or your company.

The process, the tools, and the objectivity of the search process is what enables finding the best person for a given opportunity. In addition, you should also know how to get that person integrated to your company. That takes time, and by all means anyone can do it, but you have a business to run, people to manage, and clients to serve. Wouldn’t it be better to delegate? How do you want to manage your time Mr./Ms. Manager?
